European Belarus campaign to collect votes for Belaruss integration to EU (Video)

A beginning of the European Belarus national civil campaign was announced in Minsk on 24 January. According to the initiators of the campaign, its objective is independence security and successful development of the country, what is possible only by integration of Belarus to the EU. As Andrei Sannikov, international coordinator of Charter97, emphasised on the press conference in Minsk, integration to the EU is not only an effective course for todays Belarus, but also a vital necessity.


Gebhardt Weiss, German ambassador: Not only a dialogue between the EU and Belarus, but a dialogue inside the country is important

The 10th Minsk Forum Belarus: European Nation in Transition: Identities and Cooperation in Politics, Economics, Society has taken place on November 22-25. German ambassador to Belarus Dr. Gebhardt Weiss in his speech at the forum emphasized the fact that in actions of Belarusian elites from different camps lack rationalism. As an example he offered the European March, which was finally allowed, but arrests took place on the eve of the rally. The diplomat asked why activists were imprisoned before the rally while the decision had been taken to allow the march. Today answers questions of the Charter97 press-center.


Andrei Sannikov: Nothing stands behind quiet signals of the regime so far

Today in Minsk Gernot Erler, Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Ministry, Bundestag deputies of CDU/CSU, SPD and Green factions, Gebhardt Weiss, the German ambassador to Belarus, workers of German Foreign Ministry have had a meeting with the Charter97 international coordinator Andrei Sannikov, the chairman of the Belarusian Ppopular Front party Vintsuk Vyachorka, the leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka and the head of the organizing committee of the Belarusian Social Democratic party (Narodnaya Hramada) Mikola Statkevich. During the meeting politicians discussed the situation in Belarus and to what extent the Belarusian authorities are ready to fulfill recommendations of the EU offered a year ago.


Milinkevich: Lukashenkas Belarus means also-ran for Europe

Commenting the results of Riga conference The Baltic States and the EU Neighbourhood Policy held on November, 23, Alyaksandr Milinkevich said Europe regards Lukashenkas Belarus as an also-ran, which is hard to have dialog on cooperation with.



Belarusian authorities can miss their opportunity

November 2, the day of on Dziady (the day when Belarusians commemorate their deceased forefathers), ambassadors of European countries and of the US visited the the Kurapaty memorial site. Diplomats from Poland, Latvia, Slovakia, France, Sweden, Malta and the US gathered at the place of mass executions. First they took part in the Holy Mass near the Belarusian Martyrs Cross, laid flowers and lit candles near the so-called Belarusian Golgotha.



Counsellor of the European Commission insists on release of political prisoners

All 12 proposals of the European Union are principal for us. We can say that the most politically sensitive question is one of the release of the political prisoners, - Jean-Eric Holzapfel, Counsellor of the European Commissions representative office in Ukraine and Belarus said in the interview to Euroradio. It should be reminded that recently Aliaksandr Lukashenka permitted to open the ECs representative office in Belarus and now the negotiations on this issue are held.

Lubomir Rehak: Amnesty would be convenient and painless solution to problem of political prisoners

Concerning the political prisoners there are friction between the Belarusian authorities and international community: are there any political prisoners or not. As this topic is often being raised, we can see none of the sides is ready to meet habitat in this issue. In this context the coming amnesty would be convenient and painless solving of the problem, which is the serious obstacle to normalization of the relations between Belarus and the European Union, - Lubomir Rehak, temporary charge d affaires of Slovakia to Belarus said in his interview to Charter97 press center commenting the law On Amnesty, adopted by the house of representatives in two readings. We remind that the Embassy of Slovakia represents the European Union in Belarus.



Militia spied opposition in regions on day of European March

Democratic activist Anatol Askerka appealed to the Barysau Prosecutors Office with a complaint. The whole day of 14 October he was watched by the militia and KGB agents in order not to allow him to take part in the European March in Minsk.



Matthias Platzeck: Im not ready to deny human rights for dialog

Minister-President of Federal State Brandenburg Matthias Platzeck is making a visit to Belarus. The German politician had an appointment with Belarusian Prime Minister Siarhei Sidorski and took part in the second dispute in memory of Johannes Rau, organized by Minsk International Educational Center.
